“We really enjoyed our experience blending one of our social groups with the work we do here at the Red Cross, and we encourage others to think about how they can get their own groups — neighbors, families, bandmates, whatever — informed and involved,” Ashley Hill, Preparedness AmeriCorps Member
Yesterday, AmeriCorps members Emily Smalligan and Ashley Hill hosted an office tour for the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Seattle. As U of M grads, they thought it’d be a great opportunity to share what they love about the Red Cross with others from the school they love. The tour had a great turn out, with alumni spanning generations (class of 2012 to class of 1961!) as well as spanning King County.
The group took a stroll around the office while learning about the history of the American Red Cross and specific roles of different departments. They ended the tour looking through the onsite warehouse and vehicle fleet. They said they had a lot of fun getting to know fellow alumni in the area and share what they’ve learned during their AmeriCorps terms.
Hopefully this event was just the beginning of more events with the U of M Club. They’re looking for more group service projects, and they have plenty of members in need of preparedness information — we in Michigan know about tornadoes, but earthquakes? Emily and I hope to continue strengthening ties between the Club and the Red Cross after our terms end.
